How To Draw Lines Up And Down The Title In Latex
Part 1 | Part 2 | Office three | Part iv | Part 5
Author: Josh Cassidy (August 2013)
This v-office series of articles uses a combination of video and textual descriptions to teach the nuts of writing a thesis using LaTeX. These tutorials were get-go published on the original ShareLateX blog site during August 2013; consequently, today'southward editor interface (Overleaf) has inverse considerably due to the development of ShareLaTeX and the subsequent merger of ShareLaTeX and Overleaf. Withal, much of the content is notwithstanding relevant and teaches you some bones LaTeX—skills and expertise that will utilize across all platforms.
In the previous post we looked at calculation a bibliography to our thesis using the biblatex
bundle. In this, the final mail of the series, we're going to look at customising some of the opening pages. In the first video we made a rather makeshift title page using the \maketitle
command and past using an \includegraphics
command in the \title
control. Although this works, information technology doesn't give u.s.a. as much flexibility every bit we may want.
The Championship Page
A much better way to do this is to apply the titlepage
environment. Nosotros'll practice this in a split up .tex
file and then input information technology. The start affair we'll do is enclose everything in the title page within the center
environment and so information technology'due south all aligned to the eye. Next we need to instruct LaTeastX to go out a gap between the top of the page and the get-go line of text. To do this we use the \vspace
command followed by a length. We likewise demand to add together an asterisk into the command to brand sure LaTeX doesn't decide to ignore the control. Next nosotros'll add the thesis title in assuming font using the \textbf
control. To exit a gap between this and the next line of text we apply the \vspace
command again, this time without the asterisk. Adjacent we'll add in a subtitle followed by some more vertical space and then the author proper noun in bold font. This concludes what nosotros want at the top of the title page—the rest of the content nosotros'll add together at the bottom of the title page.
To separate these two sections out we'll use the \vfill
command which will automatically add in the amount of vertical space needed for the content to fill the folio. Next we'll add together in a line of text to specify what caste the thesis is existence submitted for. The double backslash is used to create a new line. We'll then add more space before adding in the university logo specifying it'south width as a fraction of the text width. Finally we'll add in some information nearly the academy and the appointment.
\begin {titlepage} \begin {eye} \vspace* {1cm} \textbf {Thesis Title} \vspace {0.5cm} Thesis Subtitle \vspace {i.5cm} \textbf {Author Name} \vfill A thesis presented for the degree of\\ Doctor of Philosophy \vspace {0.8cm} \includegraphics [width=0.iv\textwidth] {university} Department Name\\ Academy Name\\ Land\\ Date \end {center} \stop {titlepage}
Now in the primary .tex
file we can replace the \maketitle
command with an input command linked to our new championship page. If we now compile the lawmaking we tin see all the items take been correctly candy:
All the same, the text is quite pocket-sized so nosotros'll go dorsum and change the font sizes. To do this we'll utilize one of the simple font-sizing commands. There are ten of these to choose from, ranging from smallest to largest they are:
\tiny \scriptsize \footnotesize \small \normalsize \large \Large \LARGE \huge \Huge
Let'due south make the title as large as it can exist (using these simple commands) past choosing \Huge
. We'll and then make the subtitle ii steps smaller using \large
. When we employ one of these commands they bear on all the text in information technology's scope. Therefore in it'south current state all the remaining text on the page will appear in the size of the subtitle. We'll keep it like this for the author name and caste title but we'll drop downward one size for the academy details and the date:
\brainstorm {titlepage} \begin {center} \vspace* {1cm} \Huge \textbf {Thesis Title} \vspace {0.5cm} \LARGE Thesis Subtitle \vspace {i.5cm} \textbf {Author Name} \vfill A thesis presented for the degree of\\ Dr. of Philosophy \vspace {0.8cm} \includegraphics [width=0.iv\textwidth] {university} \Big Department Name\\ Academy Name\\ Country\\ Date \cease {middle} \end {titlepage}
The abstract
We can also customise other pages, such every bit the abstruse. Instead of using an unnumbered chapter, we'll create a new .tex
file, customise the layout so input it. At the top of this file we need to change the page style to plain
in order to end the headers being added in. Now in a similar way to the title page we'll add in some custom titles and then the abstract text.
\thispagestyle {plain} \begin {center} \Big \textbf {Thesis Title} \vspace {0.4cm} \large Thesis Subtitle \vspace {0.4cm} \textbf {Author Proper name} \vspace {0.9cm} \textbf {Abstract} \terminate {center} Lorem ipsum dolor...
This is what it will expect like added in:
This concludes our serial on writing a bones thesis. If y'all want to play effectually with the thesis nosotros've created in this series you lot can open the project in Overleaf.
